Funny Ears Stage

Hey everyone, it’s Sarah. Just wanted to share a couple new pics of Eddie. He’s getting to the point now where his ears are starting to turn forward a little and stand up more. Oh, and I have a pic of him and his Daddy from Aug 25th to share too 🙂1233522_710001062043_1288697147_n

We had a bit of a rough time this past week. Eddie had a puppy stomach virus on Thursday and was not feeling well, although by looking at him playing you couldn’t really tell. Then on Friday he came with me to the horse farm and leapt out of the golf cart while we were feeding horses, coming up squalling with a nasty bloody nose. Took a trip to the vet, and they gave him a shot for the swelling on his poor little face and a prescription for a round of Amoxicillin to ward off a sinus infection after the nose bleed. He decided that the pink liquid that comes out of the syringe is pretty darn tasty! So all in all he’s fine, although I still feel terrible about the whole thing. But, he’s back to himself again I am happy to report. We did find out on our trip to the vet Friday that he weighs 15.5 lbs now at 10 weeks, so we are growing well!  Most of it may be in the ears, but I will let you all decide that…

Met with a Vet today

Hey everyone.  As promised, we actually have some news for this update.  We went to a vet today to get our second set of shots, as well as a microchip, and Eddie was wonderful.  He waited patiently until it was his turn, and only whimpered when the tech put in the microchip.  He was also weighed today and we’re happy to report that he’s gone from 7 lbs at 6 wks to 14 lbs at 9 wks.  The vet says that he “should” stay small (for a Dane) which is only going to be good for him in the long run.  The vet that we saw today is a large animal specialist, mostly equine, but as Eddie is part horse, we’re OK going to see him.  He looked at Eddies leg and seems to think that his leg will probably have to come off so that he can have the best life possible.  He also said that even though he’s been a vet for a long time (30 years I think) he’s never seen a deformation like Eddie has.  After looking Eddie over and examining his leg, he told us that we need to find a specialist to look at it and even recommended a specialist service, which luckily turned out to be the one that Eddie has already been seen at!  Anyways, as you can see above, Eddie has definitely grown from when we first got him and below, you can see how his leg coming along compared to the rest of him.  His leg doesn’t seem to hinder him at all and once I figure out how, I plan to put a quick video or two of Eddie running and playing.  Well that’s about it for now.  Hopefully by next week I’ll be able to tell everyone about a new vet and if we actually have a game plan on how to address Eddies leg.  See ya next time.

9 weeks old this week

Hey everyone.  I know I missed last week but everybody can understand how life seems to happen sometimes.  Anyways, just a quick update today and more later this week.  Eddie will be 9 weeks old on Thursday, so we’re going to get our next rounds of shots and then we’re off to start discussing what to do with his leg.  Besides that, he’s starting to do better overall.  He knows to go to the door if he has to go outside, and although he’s still waking us up to go out during the night, we’re still having to clean up a little from the overnight hours.  We’re making progress with the crate as well.  He doesn’t like being put in at first, but he’s only whimpering for about 5-10 minutes now.  We’ve also met some a couple of the neighbor dogs, but have been very careful about who, mostly because we’ve been waiting on shots.  No new pictures today, but I’ll have some for the next post, as well as weight and overall size updates too.  Thanks everyone and have a good week!

Greetings Everyone! I’m Eddie

Eddie

Hello Everyone, I’m Ryan. My fiancee Sarah and I have adopted Eddie, a Blue Great Dane. Eddie is 7 weeks old TODAY, and would like me to share our adventure. Eddie was born to a friend of ours in a litter of 13. Eddie started life out right, being the runt of the litter and being born with a noticeably bad right hind leg. Our friend spoke with a vet who thought it was just a weak bone and advised them to splint the leg once he starts moving around. They tried this, leaving him splinted for about 1 week. Without noticing any improvement over the first week, they decided to take Eddie to a Vet Referral service to be looked at. At the vet, they took X-rays and it was discovered that Eddie was born without a tibia, which is the larger bone in the lower leg. This is where we come in.

It was decided early on that Eddie was going to need his leg removed for a couple reasons, most importantly his quality of life. Sarah and I discussed Eddie for a few weeks, trying to decide whether we could welcome him into our home, mostly because, despite our love of large dogs, Eddie is a Dane and we weren’t sure if we were ready for such an undertaking. When the final options were laid on the table, it was decided for us that we would take Eddie in because we couldn’t bear the thought of Eddie being sent to a rescue or shelter and taking his chances with just anybody. We brought him home today and our adventure begins.

So far, we’ve only been able to get a couple pictures. Below is what Eddie’s leg looks like while we could get him standing still, which is pretty much only while he eats.
